The IDEA Odyssey Collective is back in action and, now, on the move. Rather than maintaining a regular gallery space, we will be organizing exhibitions in various locations.
Be a part of our next show, History X, Contemporary Y, at Tougo Coffee in the Central District, by submitting your artwork for consideration by April 22, 2013. Seattle-based artist and teacher Mark Takamichi Miller is the guest juror. The exhibition’s title plays off of the collective’s slogan, “historic neighborhood, contemporary art,” and asks contributing artists and viewers to explore how our histories shape our contemporary understanding of representation and identity. Selected work will be exhibited June 20 through July 31, 2013. Funding for this exhibition is provided, in part, by the Washington State Arts Commission.

Our friends at the Wing Luke Asian Museum (WLAM) and Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda) have two opportunities for artists.
SCIDpda presents its annual EXPOSED: Little Saigon Photo Contest. Explore Seattle’s Little Saigon and capture it in one of four categories for the contest: culture (images that represent the Vietnamese culture, people or heritage of the area), spaces and places (buildings and streetscapes that define Little Saigon), food (food enjoyed and bought in Little Saigon), and the marketplace (a local Little Saigon business in action). Deadline for images is Wed., Oct. 31st, at 4 pm. Check out Exposed: Little Saigon for entry details.

Also, start working on new art now or looking through your past works for WLAM’s Beyond Race 2013 exhibition. According to the exhibition prospectus, “Potential themes for artwork include but are not limited to:

The intersection of race with gender, age, class, sexual orientation, immigration status, and other identities.

The rise of multi-racial individuals and families in the U.S.—does this change the meaning of race?

Immigrant/refugee perspectives on race in the U.S.

How art can express pain, grief, rage—and still inspire healing

Historic roots of race and racism—resulting realities today and visions for the future.

Different forms of racism: personal prejudice, structural inequity, overt and “hidden” racism

Is white still the American “norm”? Is there a new American norm?

Talking about race: subversive or patriotic?

Cultural appropriation versus cross-cultural exploration/inspiration.”

If that has stirred up some ideas for you, get to work! Deadline for submissions is Feb. 1, 2013. Contact Mikala Woodward for more submission details.

Jackson to see what place is next in our journey.

It had been our hope to stay in the Storefronts Seattle space awarded to us last year, but we were not able to negotiate an agreement with our landlord. We are extremely grateful to Storefronts Seattle and the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda) for allowing us to stay in the space well beyond our original temporary residency award.

We are also grateful for the many supporters, volunteers, donors and funders who helped us keep the doors open and accomplish so much in such a short time. Since last July, IDEA Odyssey Gallery opened eight shows, and featured 30 local and national artists whose work centers around identity, diversity, and culture – including at least four artists who had not previously exhibited. This little collective gallery that could, did and we, the members, are glad to have contributed to Seattle’s arts community and to the International District.

All this work took a lot of energy and devotion, and we view this space development as an opportunity not a challenge. Our plans right now are simple: to rest (and make art!) for at least six months.

We hope that the time off over the fall and winter will reinvigorate us, create new connections to artists and partners, and tug at our hearts and minds to reimagine our future as a collective. Until then, please stay in touch with us on Facebook and through our website’s blog.

Please drop in and visit our excellent current exhibit, “One,” featuring painter Victor Fuentes, photographer Wanda Benvenutti, and multimedia artist Jacque Larrainzar. The exhibit, along with the gallery in its current iteration, closes on August 24th. Our gallery hours are Thursday, 3-7 p.m., Friday, 2-6 p.m., and Saturday 11-3 p.m.

Again, thanks for embracing IDEA Odyssey Gallery’s mission and the visions of all the artists whose work graced our humble walls.

Co-founder Carina del Rosario

Co-founder SuJ’n Chon

Co-founder Minh Carrico

Artist Member Darius Morrison

Artist Member Victor Fuentes

This is something that hundreds of artists, arts administrators, community leaders and youth will attempt to answer this October in Seattle. SuJ’n, one of our co-founders, is helping coordinate our first ever regional symposium on how arts can and is a tool for social justice and change. Given our community’s changing demographics, closing the equity gap in and through the arts is more important than ever! We hope you can join this important dialogue and call to action this autumn!

Click here to find out more and to sign up for updates.

This two-day event is being sponsored and planned by Washington State Arts Commission, 4Culture, Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Seattle Center, Seattle Office for Civil Rights, and The Association of American Cultures.
